Chelsea have been handed a transfer blow in the ongoing January transfer window as their target Lucas Digne, who currently plays at Everton, has accepted personal terms to join Aston Villa.

A report via talkSPORT revealed that the French defender is all but set to sign a long-term contract with Steven Gerrard’s side.

The report added that Aston Villa are hopeful of completing a £25 million swoop for the Everton left-back this week.

Digne’s departure from Everton is owing to the fact that he has lost some playing chances under coach Rafael Benitez who has also confirmed that the left ack defender wanted to leave Goodison Park.

The France international only signed a new contract with the Toffees in February 2021, which was supposed to run until 2025 and is said to be earning £120,000-a-week.

Chelsea had hoped to sign Digne as a replacement for England international Ben Chilwell, who is on the sideline owing to injury.

The Blues would have to look elsewhere as they want to sign a new defender before the close of the January transfer window.
