Chelsea is still in discussions with Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca regarding his potential move to Stamford Bridge.

Despite ongoing talks, no agreement has been reached yet, according to football.london. The Italian coach has not finalized a deal to become Chelsea’s new head coach, and the club is seeking a swift resolution.

Face-to-Face Meetings in Spain

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, flew to Spain to meet with Maresca in person. They identified the 44-year-old as their top candidate to replace Mauricio Pochettino, who left the club by mutual consent last week after leading Chelsea to a sixth-place finish in his first season.

Maresca as the Leading Candidate

After days of deliberation, Maresca emerged as the clear favorite for the role. Although he has only managed one full season at the senior level – having a brief 14-match stint at Parma – there is excitement about his potential to bring success to Stamford Bridge.

Contract Negotiations

Chelsea hopes to secure Maresca on a five-year contract, aiming to finalize the deal by the end of the week. This would give both the recruitment team and Maresca ample time to prepare for the new season. Despite the lack of an agreement so far, there are no significant issues reported. Chelsea is expected to compensate Leicester for Maresca, who is currently under contract with the club.

Recruitment Process

Initial contact with Maresca gauged his interest in the role, and Leicester permitted Chelsea to negotiate. Winstanley and Stewart then intensified their efforts to secure their third permanent head coach in 15 months.

Other Candidates Considered

Chelsea also considered Brentford manager Thomas Frank, former Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi, and Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna. However, Maresca’s impressive year with Leicester, where he secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt, made him the standout choice.

Maresca’s Background

Maresca has an extensive coaching background, having served as Manuel Pellegrini’s assistant at West Ham and spent time in Spain with Sevilla. He played a crucial role as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during Manchester City’s treble-winning 2022/23 campaign before joining Leicester.

Chelsea remains in negotiations with Enzo Maresca, aiming to finalize his appointment as the new head coach. The club hopes to resolve the situation swiftly to allow for adequate preparation time for the upcoming season.
