Manchester United are reportedly in pole position to sign highly-rated West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with Real Madrid increasingly pessimistic about their chances of securing the Portuguese star this summer.

Fernandes enjoyed a standout campaign despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League, further enhancing his reputation as one of the brightest young midfield talents in English football. The 21-year-old contributed three goals and four assists during the season and was one of the few positives in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Hammers.

With West Ham now preparing for life outside the top flight, speculation surrounding Fernandes’ future has intensified. Several leading European clubs are believed to be monitoring his situation, but Manchester United appear to have moved into a commanding position in the race for his signature.

Although West Ham shareholder Daniel Kretinsky has maintained that the club are not under pressure to sell, reports suggest an offer in the region of £80 million could be enough to secure a deal. Such a fee would represent a significant return on the club’s investment and reflect Fernandes’ growing status in the game.

New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is known to be a long-time admirer of the midfielder and had identified him as a potential addition to strengthen his squad. However, reports indicate that senior figures at the Santiago Bernabéu now expect Fernandes to choose a move to Old Trafford instead.

Should the transfer be completed, it would mark a major statement of intent from Manchester United as they continue their efforts to rebuild and strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season.
