Chelsea Sets Sights on Nico Williams as Top Priority Right Winger
Reports indicate that Chelsea has singled out Nico Williams, also linked with Arsenal, as their primary target following Michael Olise’s rejection.
Chelsea actively pursued Olise, impressed by his stellar season finale with Crystal Palace, where he amassed ten goals and six assists in 19 Premier League outings.
Despite previous attempts to secure Olise, including last summer’s pursuit before his contract extension, Chelsea renewed their interest due to a £60m release clause in his deal.
However, Olise’s decision to join Bayern Munich dashed Chelsea’s hopes, with Newcastle United also vying for his signature.
While Chelsea withdrew from the Olise chase, they maintain their quest for a new right winger, shifting their focus to Athletic Bilbao’s standout performer, Williams.
The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakout season with the Spanish side, contributing eight goals and 19 assists across 37 appearances. Williams’s impressive form continued into Euro 2024, where he shines for Spain, elevating his team’s status as tournament contenders.
Although predominantly deployed on the left flank, Williams offers versatility and proficiency on the right, aligning with Chelsea’s requirements for wing depth.
Arsenal, also eyeing reinforcements, reportedly intensifies efforts to secure Williams to bolster competition for Bukayo Saka.
However, Chelsea remains keen on Williams, with Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio indicating their proactive pursuit, labeling him their top priority target.
