Chelsea have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for £45 million, as the Argentine shot-stopper considers a summer move away from Villa Park.

According to The Mirror, Villa may be forced to sell the 2022 World Cup winner in order to comply with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), despite manager Unai Emery’s reluctance to lose one of his key players.

Martinez, 32, has emerged as a potential target for both Chelsea and Manchester United, with both clubs evaluating their goalkeeping options ahead of the new season. Chelsea, in particular, have struggled to establish a consistent first-choice goalkeeper in recent years.

Robert Sanchez, signed from Brighton, failed to cement his position and has fallen out of favour under both Mauricio Pochettino and current boss Enzo Maresca. Djordje Petrovic, who impressed briefly under Pochettino, was loaned out to Strasbourg and is expected to complete a permanent switch to the French side. Meanwhile, Filip Jorgensen, a £24m signing last year, has yet to convince Maresca that he is ready to take on the No.1 role.

With Manchester United also assessing Andre Onana’s future after an underwhelming season, Martinez has emerged as a viable option for both clubs. Chelsea’s interest may now depend on whether they consider Martinez the right fit to finally bring stability to their goalkeeping position, which has remained unsettled for several seasons.
