Barely less than 2 days to the end of the January transfer window, Chelsea are said to remain in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

The Portuguese club have so far refused to listen to any offer below their £105.4m release clause for Fernandez.

Should the Blues meet Benfica’s valuation, the transfer for Fernandez would surpass the £100m Man City paid for Jack Grealish from Aston Villa 18 months ago, making him the most expensive Premier League signing ever.

The 22-year-old Argentine star wants to move to Chelsea but he has been training and playing since he was dropped for one game for going on an unauthorised trip home to Argentina for a New Year’s Eve party, Sky Sports report.

Aside from Fernandez, Chelsea have also tried to sign other midfielders including Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and Everton’s Amadou Onana but they are yet to get any deal done.

The Blues are keen on signing a new midfielder as Jorginho and N’Golo Kante’s current contracts would expire at the end of this season.
