Chelsea have apparently been handed a significant boost in their endeavor to sign AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma on a free transfer this summer.

The Italy international, who has been connected with a move to Stamford Bridge, is out of contract toward the end of this season.

Gianluigi Donnarumma’s present club AC Milan have only won five of their last 10 games in Serie A, leaving them in danger of not qualifying for the following year’s Champions League, sitting just four points ahead of Napoli in fifth.

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Milan’s talks over another contract with the 22-year-old have slowed down, with the possibility of missing out on Champions League football being a major obstacle.

Regardless of having Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga in his squad, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is enthused about exploiting the contract circumstance and signing the youngster this summer on free transfer.

Gianluigi Donnarumma has saved 83 clean sheets in 243 appearances for his boyhood club, having broken into the side at 16 years old.
