Chelsea are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria as the club moves quickly to replace Marc Cucurella following his transfer to Real Madrid.

The Blues are understood to have submitted an offer close to Chavarria’s £21.5 million release clause, with discussions now entering their final stages. Although Chelsea’s proposal has not yet triggered the clause, it is believed to be close enough to keep negotiations progressing positively.

Strengthening the left side of the defence has become a priority after Cucurella completed his move to Real Madrid earlier this summer in a deal worth up to £51.8 million. His departure left Chelsea short of specialist options at left-back, prompting the club to accelerate its search for reinforcements.

New head coach Xabi Alonso is expected to use Jorrel Hato in multiple defensive roles next season, but Chelsea still want another natural left-back to provide competition and depth across the campaign.

Chavarria has emerged as the preferred candidate after impressing with Rayo Vallecano in La Liga. The 28-year-old featured in 44 matches last season, earning a reputation for his defensive consistency, work rate and ability to contribute in attacking areas.

Chelsea believe the Spaniard’s experience and reliability would make him an ideal addition as Alonso continues rebuilding the squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

If negotiations continue as expected, Chavarria could become Chelsea’s latest signing of the summer, adding further depth to a squad that has already undergone significant changes as the club aims to return to the Premier League’s top four and challenge for major honours.
