Chelsea captain and defender Cesar Azpilicueta is on the course of leaving the club in the January transfer window.

This comes as the latest report has linked Azpilicueta with moves away from Stamford Bridge.

Despite being a key player in the Blues squad, Chelsea seems to be more focused on extending the contract of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, whose contract will lapse at the end of this campaign.

There are indications that Chelsea are less concerned about keeping their captain and would let him leave when his contract lapse.

According to The Athletic, Azpilicueta is hoping to be offered the security of a multi-year contract by the Blues.

But going by Chelsea’s history, they are known only to give an offer of 12-month extensions to players in their 30s, which is the category Azpilicueta belongs to.

The report revealed that Barcelona are keen on signing the Blues skipper, especially as their new manager Xavi is a ‘huge admirer’ of the Chelsea centre-back.

Azpilicueta is said to be having a negotiation ongoing with the Spanish club alongside a lawyer and may make known his decision soon.

Starting from the first of January, Azpilicueta is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club.
