Chelsea advised against letting this 37-year-old defender leave

Chelsea suffered a defeat to West Ham this weekend in a game that ended in a 3-2 scoreline.

The Blues defender and Brazil international Thiago Silva fired the first goal against the Hammers, and he was one of the most impressive on the Blues squad today.

Reacting to Silva’s performance vs West Ham, former Chelsea winger Joe Cole has urged the Blues board not to allow the Brazil star to leave.

Cole stressed that Silva has been a ‘fantastic signing’ for the west London club and believes there is no reason those in charge of the club should allow him to leave as his contract expires.

The Blues signed Silva on a free transfer in August 2020 and has since remained one of the most spectacular players at Chelsea despite his age.

While Silva’s current contract is due to expire at the end of the campaign, there are claims that Chelsea are likely to extend it by one year.

“There’s a lot of youthful and aggressive players around him and he’s been a fantastic signing,” Cole said, according to Metro.

“There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be given another one-year deal because he’s been outstanding.

“When he plays in the centre of a three, having the system where the wing-backs are high, he has so many options and when you’ve got a player with a range of passing like Thiago Silva he’s going to look unbelievable.

“He’s got the left wing-back, the right wing-back and he’s got options in midfield.

“He’s probably having the time of his career and he’s 37, it’s unbelievable.”
