Arsenal Receive Major Transfer Boost as Atletico Star Hints at Summer Exit
Arsenal have received fresh encouragement in their reported pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez after one of his teammates admitted he hopes the Argentine remains at the club, while acknowledging the final decision rests with the player.
Alvarez has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards following another productive campaign in Spain and an impressive showing for Argentina at the World Cup. Since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in 2024, the 26-year-old has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances, attracting interest from several elite clubs, including Arsenal and Barcelona.
Speculation surrounding his future intensified after Atletico midfielder Alex Baena spoke about Alvarez’s situation. While making it clear he wants his teammate to stay, Baena admitted that any desire from the striker to leave could ultimately prove decisive.
Speaking to Spanish outlet COPE, Baena joked that he would “chain” Alvarez to the club if he could, underlining just how highly the forward is valued within Atletico’s dressing room. However, he also accepted that a player determined to seek a new challenge may be difficult to convince otherwise.
For Arsenal, the comments are likely to fuel optimism as Mikel Arteta continues his search for a proven goalscorer capable of leading the line next season. The Gunners have been linked with several attacking targets this summer, but Alvarez remains one of the standout names on their shortlist.
Although Atletico Madrid are expected to resist any approach for one of their key players, interest from Europe’s biggest clubs is unlikely to disappear. Whether Arsenal decide to test Atletico’s resolve with a formal offer could become one of the defining transfer stories of the summer window.
