Why Unai Emery was able to defeat Man Utd

Former Arsenal and Villarreal coach, Unai Emery on Wednesday night bagged his fourth Europa League with the Spanish club following a clash with Man Utd in the final of the second rated tournament in Europe.

The match started with Gerard Moreno giving Villarreal an early lead in the first half before Edison Cavani found the equalizer for Man Utd and the game went on to end on penalty kicks in favour of Villarreal.

Following Emery’s latest win, former Man Utd stars, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand have applauded him for the football tactics that saw him snuff out Bruno Fernandes who is man Utd key player.

The Portuguese was silent all through the game and was unable to have much effect in the game.

A look at the match showed that Emery seemed to have assigned Etienne Capoue with the task of nullifying Fernandes.

”We spoke a lot before the game about the effect Bruno Fernandes has for United.

“Unai Emery is probably the first manager who has really tried to snuff that out and he did that tonight,” Scholes said.

Ferdinard on his part said, “I just think tactically Unai Emery got it spot on tonight.”

“Bruno, as Scholesy said, was absolutely nullified and he was close down at all times and the space for people like Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani to get behind and exploit that space – with their pace and movement and anticipation – was never there today.”
