Tottenham Hotspur are exploring a move for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, potentially setting up a transfer battle with Manchester United for one of the Premier League’s most highly rated young talents.

The 21-year-old is expected to leave West Ham this summer after the club suffered relegation to the Championship. Fernandes only arrived at the London Stadium last year from Southampton in a deal worth an initial £38 million, with a further £3 million in potential add-ons.

Despite West Ham’s difficult campaign, the Portuguese midfielder enhanced his reputation with a series of impressive performances. He contributed three goals and four assists in 36 Premier League appearances, attracting interest from several top clubs.

Manchester United have reportedly identified Fernandes as a priority target as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season. The midfielder is understood to be open to a move to Old Trafford, particularly after United secured a return to Champions League football under manager Michael Carrick.

However, Tottenham have now entered the race and are believed to have made an initial enquiry regarding Fernandes’ availability. Spurs are keen to reinforce their squad and view the Portugal international as a player capable of making an immediate impact while also offering significant long-term potential.

Valued at around £80 million, Fernandes remains one of the most sought-after midfielders on the market. His future is expected to be one of the major transfer stories of the summer, with both Tottenham and Manchester United monitoring developments closely as they look to secure his signature.
