Premier League addresses Arsenal’s Saliba’s red card
Arsenal defender and France international William Saliba has been making headlines after he was handed a red card during the Gunners’ first game after the international break.
Recall that the North London club returned to action on Saturday when they face Bournemouth, ending their unbeaten run.
The highlight of the match was the red card shown to Saliba, reducing Arsenal to a ten man squad while giving Bournemouth an edge.
Following the match, the Premier League have released a statement, addressing reason the Arsenal defender was sent off after a VAR check in their 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth.
Referee Rob Jones had initially shown Saliba a yellow card after he brought down Evanilson.
However, Jones was asked to review the incident on the pitch side monitor by VAR and eventually showed the French defender a red card.
The Premier League in a statement via social media said the referee gave Saliba a yellow card for a challenge on Evanilson.
The football body added that the VAR deemed that Saliba denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and recommended an on-field review, making the referee upgrading the yellow to a red card.
Saliba will now be unavailable for Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool next Sunday.
