Former football star Danny Murphy in a recent statement claimed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta promised to make David Raya the club’s number one goalkeeper.

It is no longer news that Raya is close to moving to Arsenal on a season-long loan from Brentford with an option to buy for £27 million permanently next summer.

While he would bolster Arteta’s goalkeeping options after Aaron Ramsdale’s Deputy Matt Turner moved to Premier League rival Nottingham Forest this summer, there are speculation Raya could emerge as the Gunners’ next number one.

Murphy reckoned Arteta told Raya he was being signed to be Arsenal’s No.1 and will replace Ramsdale ‘pretty soon’.

“It’s a really difficult one because most clubs don’t have two equally good goalkeepers,” Murphy said on the FIVE YouTube channel.

“For obvious reasons that doesn’t work. This insecurity kicks in with goalkeepers if they think they could get replaced every weekend.

“I’m surprised because I thought Aaron Ramsdale was brilliant last season. I really like him and his character. I think he’s done so well so I feel for him a bit.

“When you sit down with a player and pay £30m for him, do you think David Raya thinks he’s coming as the No. 2? I think he’s been told he will be No. 1.”
