Mikel Merino to Arsenal Transfer Takes Fresh Twist as Complex Deal Faces Doubts

Arsenal’s pursuit of Spanish international Mikel Merino has encountered new challenges, revealing that the transfer may not be as straightforward as initially suggested.
With the Gunners recently securing the £42 million signing of Riccardo Calafiori and David Raya joining last month, the club remains focused on further strengthening its squad ahead of the new season.
Mikel Arteta has emphasized the need for additional resources, particularly in midfield, following the departure of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham for £34 million.
The Gunners have been exploring several options to fill the left eight position, having previously contacted Everton about Amadou Onana before he moved to Aston Villa.
Additionally, they looked at Bruno Guimaraes, but Newcastle’s asking price proved excessive, while Douglas Luiz joined Juventus instead. Joao Neves was also on their radar but is now set to join Paris Saint-Germain.
While Merino has garnered significant external attention, the situation is complicated. Despite Arsenal’s interest, discussions with the player’s representatives have yet to progress into formal negotiations.
The club’s decision-makers regard Merino as a valuable asset due to his exceptional duel-winning ability and potential to provide competition for Declan Rice. At 28, he represents a ready-made signing that could immediately bolster Arsenal’s midfield and help close the gap on Manchester City.
However, some figures within Arsenal’s hierarchy have expressed concerns regarding Merino’s age, as the club has typically focused on younger players to build for the future.
Although there are compelling reasons for pursuing Merino, the complexities of the transfer market mean that significant obstacles remain. For now, Arsenal will continue to evaluate multiple midfield targets as they seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
