Fabrizio Romano Reveals Arsenal Contact for Atletico Madrid Defender as Transfer Plans Expand

Arsenal have reportedly made contact with Atletico Madrid over the availability of defender Marc Pubill as Mikel Arteta continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.
Julian Alvarez remains one of Arsenal’s biggest transfer targets, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Gunners are also exploring a potential deal for his Atletico Madrid teammate.
The 23-year-old Pubill has emerged as an option for Arsenal as the club looks to add another centre-back to its squad. Romano claims the north London side have already approached Atletico to enquire about the defender, suggesting their summer recruitment plans extend beyond the pursuit of Alvarez.
Arsenal are understood to be determined to strengthen their defence despite already completing the permanent signing of Piero Hincapie. Arteta wants greater depth and competition across his defensive options as the club prepares to defend its Premier League title and compete in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, Alvarez’s situation remains complicated. The Argentina international has made his desire to leave Atletico clear, with Barcelona believed to be his preferred destination. However, the Catalan club may struggle to meet Atletico’s huge asking price, reportedly between €150 million and €200 million.
That could potentially give Arsenal an opportunity to enter the race, although Atletico remain determined to keep their star forward.
For now, Arsenal’s interest in Pubill appears to be a separate pursuit, with Romano suggesting the club will continue searching for another centre-back.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Arsenal could yet be involved in several major deals as Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta look to complete the final pieces of their squad.
