Erik ten Hag Outlines Key Steps for Manchester United to Challenge Man City and Arsenal
Erik ten Hag, Manchester United’s manager, has made it clear that consistency is the next critical step for his team if they are to become serious contenders for the Premier League title.
Ten Hag, who has already secured the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his tenure at Old Trafford, believes that while his team has shown they can compete with top opponents, they must now focus on consistently picking up points across the board.
Ten Hag emphasized that Manchester United has proven their capability by defeating teams like Liverpool and Manchester City, but the challenge lies in maintaining this level of performance against all opponents, including those lower in the league table.
He stressed the importance of not underestimating any team in the Premier League, where the competition is fierce, and acknowledged that other teams have been more consistent in securing points, which is where United needs to improve.
Reflecting on last season, Ten Hag acknowledged that while their FA Cup victory was a highlight, their Premier League campaign was disappointing, marked by a record 14 losses, an eighth-place finish, and 58 goals conceded.
To address these issues, Ten Hag pointed out the need for better decision-making and reactions when the team loses possession, an area they have been working on in pre-season.
Ten Hag also discussed the integration of new signings, including 18-year-old Leny Yoro and 23-year-old Joshua Zirkzee, with the latter expected to debut in the Community Shield against Manchester City.
He noted that while adapting to the Premier League takes time, Zirkzee’s previous experiences in Belgium, Germany, and Italy will be beneficial.
Additionally, Ten Hag expressed confidence in Marcus Rashford, who struggled last season but showed promising form during the pre-season tour.
Ten Hag believes that both individual improvement and team support are crucial in helping Rashford rediscover his prolific form from the 2022-23 season.
As United looks ahead to the new season, Ten Hag’s focus on consistency, improved defense, and the integration of new talent will be key factors in their pursuit of Premier League success.
