Arsenal are keen on signing a new midfielder before the summer transfer window closes and they are said to have their eyes on a player in the Spanish La Liga.

In a recent report, Real Sociedad coach Imanol Alguacil confirmed Arsenal are trying to sign their midfielder Mikel Merino after he was unavailable during their opening defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

While the North London club were thought to be focused on signing Martin Zubimendi, they, however, switched their attention from a number six to a number eight such as Merino.

Recall that the former Newcastle United player failed to shne in the Premier League during his time at St James’ Park, but impressed at Sociedad and was part of the Spain squad that won Euro 2024 this summer.

With the midfielder now in the last 12 months of his deal, Sociedad are ready to let him for leave this summer, and a report by The Times has been claimed that Arsenal are nearing an agreement over a €35m (£29.8m) deal.

There were concerns about the deal, with some at Arsenal harbouring concerns about signing a player in his prime rather than a younger prospect, but the deal is expected to happen this summer.
