Arsenal Warned They Must Pay Premium as Premier League Giants Take Firm Transfer Stance
Arsenal have been told they will need to meet a significant asking price if they hope to prise one of the Premier League’s top midfielders away from Newcastle United this summer.
The Gunners continue to be linked with the Brazilian international as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his midfield ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Reports claim Arsenal believe this could be the ideal time to test Newcastle’s resolve, with the player approaching the final two years of his current contract.
It has also been suggested that Arsenal are prepared to offer the midfielder a lucrative five-year contract that would represent a substantial increase on his current earnings, underlining the club’s determination to secure his signature.
However, Newcastle have made their position crystal clear. The Magpies are reportedly under no pressure to sell, largely because they hold an option to extend the player’s contract by a further year. As a result, they remain confident they are in a strong negotiating position and are expected to reject any offers they consider below his true market value.
The midfielder remains a key figure in Eddie Howe’s plans, and Newcastle are determined to keep hold of one of their most influential players unless an exceptional offer is made.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is understood to be overseeing several major transfer pursuits simultaneously as the club looks to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League and Champions League titles.
While Arsenal’s interest appears genuine, Newcastle’s firm stance means any potential deal is likely to require a substantial financial commitment before negotiations can progress.
