Latest Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners on High Alert for Athletic Bilbao Star
Arsenal remain firmly in the race to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, competing with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona have publicly expressed their financial capability to meet Williams’ £49 million (€58m) release clause, with club president Joan Laporta confirming their intentions.
“Economically speaking, we could commit to the signing of Nico Williams,” Laporta told Catalunya Radio. “We are working with [new coach Hansi] Flick on possible signings. Now we have to leave [sporting director] Deco to close the operations we are working on. Our financial situation has improved a lot. We’re close to normality. Today, Barca can sign big names as we did our job.”
Despite Barcelona’s strong position, Arsenal remain in contention, with PSG also actively pursuing the Spain international following his impressive performances at Euro 2024. According to RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins, PSG are negotiating with Williams, though Barcelona’s involvement complicates matters.
As PSG intensifies their efforts, Arsenal may need to act swiftly. According to TNATS via Patreon, Arsenal believe Barcelona may struggle to finalize the transfer, prompting the Gunners to wait patiently. With the Riccardo Calafiori deal nearing completion, Arsenal are poised for a potential late hijack of Williams, Mikel Arteta’s favored target.
Arsenal are also considering signing Mikel Merino, adding the 28-year-old midfielder to their list of potential acquisitions.
