Arsenal is nearing a £25 million agreement for Mikel Merino, a move that could significantly impact their midfield and forward options, particularly for Kai Havertz.

With the Premier League season set to kick off next weekend, Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his squad, having already secured the permanent signing of David Raya and added defender Riccardo Calafiori.

The departure of Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham for £34 million has highlighted the need for further reinforcements in midfield.

While Arsenal works on securing Merino, Havertz, originally signed as a midfielder, has impressed in pre-season by returning to a deeper role.

He has been effective as a left-sided number eight, scoring and assisting in the recent 4-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

His strong performances could see him retain this role for the season opener against Wolves, depending on whether Merino’s transfer is completed in time.

If Merino joins the Gunners, he is likely to take on the left-side number eight position, allowing Havertz to shift back to the forward role where he thrived last season, netting 14 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions.

This strategic adjustment could reduce Arsenal’s immediate need for another striker, especially as they aim to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title.

With Merino’s addition, Havertz would still provide valuable depth in midfield, enhancing Arteta’s options as the Gunners look to improve their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
