34-year-old Giroud urged to stay beyond January at Chelsea

The January transfer window could see France international, Olivier Giroud leave Stamford Bridge for another club.

Giroud has lacked enough playing chances in the Premier League under coach Frank Lampard who prefers to use Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner.

There could however be new changes following Giroud’s performance in the past few days.

On Wednesday night, the 34-year-old scored all four goals for Chelsea against Spanish giant Sevilla in the Champions League.

This gave him a spot in the Premier League match vs. Leeds United where he also scored again.

His performance seems to be making Chelsea and Lampard consider keeping him at Stamford Bridge.

Football pundit, Paul Merson in a statement has also urged Giroud to remain at Chelsea beyond January despite the limited playing chances. He noted that even if the French striker doesn’t play regularly, he would get a start for France in the Euros.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Every team in the Premier League would take Olivier Giroud like a shot.

But he should stay at Chelsea because even if he’s not playing every week, he will still start for France at the Euros.

“He is a model pro and whenever he comes on, he affects the game. He is always ready. Look what he did against Sevilla when they started with him.

“Four goals, against a decent team. And he was outstanding. Unplayable – which is unusual when you’re not blessed with pace.

“If he had played in that second half against Tottenham, Chelsea might have won because Reece James was putting some great balls into the box.
