Newcastle Set for Transfer Shake-Up With Replacement Target Already Identified
Newcastle United may be standing firm on their valuation of Sandro Tonali, but the club is also preparing for the possibility of losing one of its most influential players this summer.
Tonali has emerged as a target for several Premier League rivals, including Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham are understood to have made the first move, submitting an £80 million bid that Newcastle promptly rejected. The Magpies value the Italian midfielder at around £100 million and remain determined to keep hold of him, particularly given that he still has three years remaining on his contract at St James’ Park.
Since arriving from AC Milan in a deal worth approximately £55 million, Tonali has developed into one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. His performances have significantly increased both his reputation and market value, leaving Newcastle in a strong negotiating position should interest intensify.
However, the club is already considering potential replacements if a departure becomes unavoidable. One player reportedly attracting attention is AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit. The highly-rated Dutch youngster has impressed with his technical ability, composure in possession and all-round midfield qualities, leading some observers to draw comparisons with Arsenal star Declan Rice.
A move for Smit could prove far more affordable than replacing Tonali with an established elite midfielder. Reports suggest Newcastle could secure the Dutch talent for around £55 million, approximately £45 million less than the fee they are demanding for Tonali.
While Newcastle’s priority remains keeping Tonali, identifying long-term alternatives demonstrates the club’s proactive approach as they prepare for every possible scenario during the transfer window.
