Chelsea Goalkeeper Set for Crucial Talks with Enzo Maresca Amid Real Madrid Transfer Speculation

Kepa Arrizabalaga is set for discussions with new Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca to address his uncertain future.

The Spanish goalkeeper’s loan at Real Madrid has concluded, where he fell to third choice behind Ukrainian Andriy Lunin and a fully fit Thibaut Courtois.

Kepa, 29, is entering the final year of his record-breaking £72.1 million contract, signed in 2018, and now faces a pivotal career decision.

Despite his struggles in Madrid, there is a possibility he could stay, especially since Lunin, dissatisfied with his omission from the Champions League final, is open to leaving.

The appointment of Maresca at Stamford Bridge also presents an opportunity for Kepa to return to the Premier League, provided he receives assurances of regular playing time.

This necessitates a frank discussion with Maresca once the Italian manager returns from holiday later this month.

Real Madrid would welcome an extension of Kepa’s stay, either through a renewed loan or a free transfer. However, Chelsea, aiming to raise funds through player sales, may not favor this option.

Kepa’s alternatives include seeking a new club or completing his contract with Chelsea, thereby leaving on a free transfer next summer.

A source close to the situation stated, “The uncertainty over Chelsea’s next manager has delayed decisions. Kepa also wanted to savor winning La Liga, the Spanish Supercup, and the Champions League. He will need to discuss his future with Maresca.”

“He would be content in either Madrid or London. Lunin’s potential departure from Madrid could simplify matters.”

Kepa has now won the Champions League twice, first with Chelsea in 2021 and most recently with Real Madrid.
