Former Manchester United star reveals why he left Old Trafford, insists he was not given a chance
Barcelona forward, Memphis Depay arrived in Manchester United with so much hype as many claimed he will surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s record at the club.
However, that didn’t happen as he was allowed to leave some season later after he failed to convince Jose Mourinho who was the manager at that time.
Depay who has now replaced Messi at Barcelona after his contract at Lyon expired this summer had now insisted that he was forced to leave United after team-mates questioned why Jose Mourinho froze him out.
Speaking to El Periodico, Depay stated that he thought a lot about why it went wrong.
According to the Holland international, the first season he had to adapt and it didn’t go well compared to his time at PSV.
He lost a bit of confidence and he lost the confidence of Louis Van Gaal and his staff.
Depay noted that it was hard for him the following season as he felt like he had more experience, but United changed the coach.
Jose Mourinho came and he fought to get into the team but he think the idea of giving him a chance was never in the Portuguese head.
Depay insisted that Mourinho never gave him an opportunity and this prompted Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to ask him why he wasn’t playing in the team.
At that time, Depay added that he realised that he didn’t want to be in a big club without playing and had to move to Lyon where he shone brightly.
