EPL: Why Ronaldo was benched vs Burnley

Man Utd returned to action on Tuesday night in Premier League when they face Burnley at Turf Moon.

The game saw Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rang dropping Cristiano Ronaldo from his squad, which came as a surprise to many.

The match ended in a 1-1 scoreline as Man Utd dropped points on the league table.

In a recent statement, Rangnick revealed he dropped Ronaldo from the game because it would require “a lot of sprinting”.

Instead of playing Ronaldo, Rangnick went on to start Edinson Cavani at Turf Moor.

Paul Pogba gave the Red Devils the lead, before Jay Rodriguez scored an equaliser for Burnley.

Rangnick, in a post-match statement, revealed his decision to drop Ronaldo and he explained why.

“Today it will require a lot of sprinting, chasing balls, a lot of fight for second balls.

“This best fits the profile for Edinson Cavani which is why he starts today,” Rangnick said.

The 1-1 draw against Burnley has now seen the Red Devils drop to the 5th spot on the EPL table.
