Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has opened up on why he left Chelsea for the Spanish club.

Rudiger left Stamford Bridge after his contract expired last summer.

However, Real Madrid was not the only club that were interested in him as top European clubs PSG and Barcelona were also in the race.

Speaking with Canal+Afrique, Rudiger spoke about his decision to join Real Madrid over other clubs such as PSG and Barca.

“There were a lot of rumours when PSG came, it was something I wasn’t looking for. It is nothing against PSG, it is a beautiful club. But Real Madrid are Real Madrid,” Rudiger said.

“If you want to be on the winning side, you join Real Madrid.”

The centre-back added, “When I got an ACL injury in 2016, Florentino Pérez sent me a letter wishing me a speedy recovery. I could not believe it.

“The moment I knew I could go to Real Madrid was when I lifted the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea.”
