Why Rooney slammed Man Utd players over mounting pressure on Ten Hag

Former Manchester United star, Wayne Rooney has hit out at the club’s players over the growing pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.

Rooney believes the Red Devils players should take a lot of responsibility for the mounting pressure over the club’s woes.

The pressure mounted after Newcastle United kicked the Red Devils out of the Carabao Cup tournament.

However, Rooney, who is the manager of Championship club Birmingham City, pointed his finger at the club’s players as the key problem.

Asked if he had sympathy for Ten Hag amid the mounting pressure on the former Ajax manager, Rooney said: “That is the job. That is a part of the job. We all know that when we take jobs, whatever job it is.

“I knew coming here [Birmingham] there was a lot of pressure and I’m sure Erik ten Hag knows that at Manchester United. It’s not going as well as they would like or how they would have hoped.

“But I think the players have to take a lot of responsibility as well. I know some of the players there and they are not performing to the levels I know they can.

“Of course, ultimately, it starts and ends with the manager and that is part of being a manager.

“He will get criticism after the last few weeks but I think the players can do a lot more than what they are currently doing for him.”
