Chelsea manager Graham Potter in a post-match statement has revealed why he didn’t start Mason Mount against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Potter revealed Mount was not fit enough for the match.

The match saw Potter leave Mount on the bench in their 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge

Goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn won all three points for Unai Emery’s side and leaves Chelsea 11 points behind Tottenham in fourth place.

Mount, who withdrew from England’s squad during the international break with a groin injury, was left on the bench.

In a bid to get an equaliser, Potter brought in N’Golo Kante, Noni Madueke, Conor Gallagher and Christian Pulisic instead.

When asked why he didn’t introduce Mount in the second half, Potter said: “With Mason, I just felt we were there, we were there in the game,

“We made some attacking subs and wanted to see how it all landed.

“Mason’s coming back, he only had a couple of days training.”
