Why James could be Chelsea’s next captain

Former Chelsea star Bridge Wayne has tipped English midfielder Reece James to be the club’s next manager.

Following Cesar Azpilicueta, who had worn the captaincy band since 2019, departure from Chelsea to Spanish side Atletico Madrid, this summer, the Blues have not named a new captain.

In Azpilicueta’s absence, the Blues defender And Brazil star Thiago Silva has often taken up the responsibility.

However, Bridge believes James could emerge as the Blues’ next captain under Mauricio Pochettino over Silva next season.

“For me, the armband, you could say it is an obvious decision to give it to him [Reece James]. But I’m not in there – sometimes you might see someone get the captaincy and think ‘how have they got that’ but you don’t know what they are like in the dressing room. If you don’t know the players personally, it is a really difficult one,” Bridge told Mirror Football.

“He [James] seems like he would want it, and an obvious choice, but it depends who they get in. I think the manager will probably end up making the right decision once he sees what everyone’s like on the training field. He won’t rush into the decision.”
