Manchester United Shift Focus to Ollie Watkins After Missing Out on Gyokeres

Manchester United have turned their attention to Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins after conceding defeat in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres.
The Red Devils had made Gyokeres their primary attacking target this summer, hoping to reunite him with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim, now at the helm at Old Trafford.
However, it is now widely believed that Gyokeres has chosen to join Arsenal instead, prompting United to quickly refocus their efforts. As a result, Watkins has emerged as a serious candidate to strengthen United’s front line for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 29-year-old England international is reportedly open to a move, especially after a frustrating end to last season. Despite a strong start, Watkins fell down the pecking order behind Marcus Rashford—who was on loan at Aston Villa in the latter stages of the campaign. Compounding matters, Villa narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification following a 2-0 defeat to United on the final day, which could influence Watkins’ decision to seek a new challenge.
United are also finding it difficult to finalise a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, further increasing the urgency to secure a proven Premier League forward. Watkins, known for his work rate, versatility, and consistent goal-scoring, is now at the top of United’s shortlist.
As the summer transfer window heats up, Manchester United fans will be closely watching developments, hopeful the club can land a reliable striker before the season kicks off.
