Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal Battle for €80m Sporting Star After Impressive World Cup Displays

Manchester United and Chelsea have reportedly entered the race to sign Sporting CP defender Maxi Araújo, joining Premier League rivals Arsenal in the pursuit of the highly-rated Uruguay international.
The versatile 26-year-old enjoyed an outstanding 2025/26 campaign with Sporting, establishing himself as one of the club’s standout performers. Capable of playing as a traditional left-back or in a more advanced wing-back role, Araújo contributed seven goals and six assists across all competitions, underlining his attacking threat as well as his defensive qualities.
His impressive form has continued on the international stage during the FIFA World Cup, where he has registered two goals and one assist despite Uruguay’s inconsistent performances. Marcelo Bielsa’s side now faces a crucial final group match against Spain, knowing defeat could see them eliminated if other Group H results fail to go in their favour.
According to reports from Portugal, Manchester United have stepped up their interest by sending scouts to watch Araújo during Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde. Chelsea are also keeping a close eye on the defender as they explore long-term options to strengthen the left side of their defence.
Arsenal remain firmly in the picture, with Mikel Arteta continuing his search for players who can add quality, versatility and attacking balance to his squad ahead of the new campaign.
With Sporting believed to value Araújo at around €80 million, the Portuguese champions are under no pressure to sell. However, growing interest from three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs suggests the competition for his signature could intensify as the summer transfer window progresses.
