Man Utd get new captain after Maguire was demoted

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has handed the club’s captaincy band to Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

Man United made the new appointment known in a statement via its website on Thursday.

Fernandes comes as a replacement for Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the captaincy armband by Ten Hag amid the defender’s uncertain future at Old Trafford.

“Bruno Fernandes has been named as the new club captain of Manchester United,” Man United’s statement reads in part.

Fernandes had already adorned the Red Devils’ armband during different matches in the past.

The Portugal star has scored 64 goals and created 54 assists in just 185 games for Man United since joining them in 2020.

Meanwhile, Maguire has been advised to leave Old Trafford this summer if he doesn’t want to end up as a substitute at the club next season.

It is believed that his demotion as captain means he is no longer in Ten Hag’s plan at the club.
