Manchester United and Chelsea have reportedly joined Arsenal in the race to sign Sporting CP wing-back Maxi Araujo, setting up a three-way Premier League battle for one of Portugal’s standout performers.

The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive campaign for Sporting last season, contributing seven goals and six assists in all competitions. Comfortable at both left-back and left wing, Araujo’s versatility has made him an attractive target for clubs looking to strengthen multiple areas with a single signing.

His stock has continued to rise at the World Cup, where he has already registered two goals and an assist in Uruguay’s opening two Group H matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. Those displays have only intensified interest from Europe’s top clubs.

According to reports in Portugal, Manchester United recently sent scouts to watch Araujo during Uruguay’s 2-2 draw with Cape Verde as they assess potential additions ahead of the new season. Chelsea are also believed to be monitoring the situation following Marc Cucurella’s £52 million move to Real Madrid, with the Blues identifying Araujo as a possible replacement on the left flank.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been tracking the Uruguay international for several months. Earlier reports claimed the Gunners made initial contact with the player in April after Mikel Arteta was impressed by his performances for Sporting.

With interest growing from three Premier League heavyweights, Sporting could find themselves at the centre of a major transfer battle. Araujo’s reported £69 million release clause means any club hoping to secure his signature may have to pay a premium before the summer window closes.
