Borussia Dortmund are reportedly close to finalising an agreement with Chelsea to extend the loan of midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka for the 2025/26 season.

The 21-year-old joined Dortmund on loan in January after struggling for game time at Stamford Bridge under former manager Mauricio Pochettino and now current boss Enzo Maresca. Despite his promising talent, Chukwuemeka was not considered part of Maresca’s plans, having started just one match during the first half of last season.

Chelsea, who have already made moves in the transfer market—including the signing of striker Liam Delap—are expected to remain active throughout the summer. The club is also targeting reinforcements at centre-back, left wing, and across the forward line. However, departures will be just as important, with the Blues needing to resolve the futures of several squad players.

Chukwuemeka’s stint in Germany has been hindered by injuries, a recurring issue that has limited his impact at both Chelsea and Dortmund. He made ten Bundesliga appearances last season, totaling just 245 minutes. However, the midfielder has been involved in all of Dortmund’s matches at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, suggesting a renewed level of trust from the coaching staff.

Dortmund are believed to be impressed with Chukwuemeka’s potential and are keen to continue his development within their squad. An extended loan would provide the England youth international with a fresh opportunity to regain form and confidence at a high level.

A formal agreement is expected soon, as both clubs continue to work toward a deal that suits all parties.
