Chelsea Weigh Defensive Reinforcements as Maxence Lacroix Move Remains on Hold

Chelsea are continuing to assess their defensive options this summer, with Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix remaining a player of interest as the club carefully evaluates its next move in the transfer market.
The Blues are believed to be taking a patient approach before accelerating negotiations, with several factors expected to influence whether they pursue the French defender. New head coach Xabi Alonso is keen to strengthen his backline, but Chelsea are also balancing squad planning, player departures and financial considerations before making further additions.
While defensive recruitment remains under discussion, the club is also preparing for increased competition across the squad. One position attracting particular attention is goalkeeper, where Robert Sanchez and highly-rated youngster Mike Penders are expected to battle for the No. 1 shirt next season. Penders impressed during his loan spell at Strasbourg and is now set to be given the opportunity to establish himself in the first-team squad under Alonso.
Chelsea’s plans could also be shaped by outgoing transfers. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is understood to be seeking a move away in search of regular first-team football, potentially opening the door for Penders to step into a more prominent role.
At the same time, Chelsea continue to monitor the market for defensive reinforcements, although any deal for Lacroix may depend on player sales and the club’s overall transfer budget. With a number of moving parts still to be resolved, the Blues are expected to remain patient before making a final decision on strengthening their defence ahead of the new campaign.
