Chelsea Urged to Sign Premier League Shot Stopper as Xabi Alonso Eyes Squad Improvements
Chelsea have been advised to make a move for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford this summer as incoming manager Xabi Alonso prepares to begin his reign at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso is set to officially take charge on July 1 and is expected to oversee a busy transfer window as Chelsea look to build a squad capable of challenging for major honours. While the Blues have several areas to strengthen, former England and Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham believes the goalkeeping position should be among the club’s priorities.
Current first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez enjoyed a strong campaign and has impressed many with his performances over the past year. However, some Chelsea supporters remain unconvinced that he is the long-term solution between the posts. Meanwhile, backup goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is reportedly keen to leave the club in search of regular first-team football.
Sheringham believes Pickford would be an ideal signing for Chelsea, describing the Everton and England goalkeeper as a proven performer who would immediately improve the squad. Having established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers, Pickford has consistently delivered for both club and country and remains a key figure for England on the international stage.
The 32-year-old joined Everton from Sunderland in 2017 and has since become one of the most experienced goalkeepers in English football. His leadership, shot-stopping ability and experience at the highest level are qualities that could prove valuable to Alonso as he seeks to address key areas within the Chelsea squad.
Whether Chelsea act on that advice remains to be seen, but Pickford’s name is certain to generate discussion throughout the summer transfer window.
