Chelsea Move Ahead of Man Utd in Race for Dream Midfield Target
Chelsea have reportedly stolen a march on Manchester United in the race to sign highly-rated midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni, with new head coach Xabi Alonso said to have played a decisive role in persuading the Real Madrid star to choose Stamford Bridge.
Midfield reinforcements have become a priority for several Premier League clubs this summer. Manchester City have already strengthened their squad by signing Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham Hotspur have completed a deal for Mateus Fernandes and are expected to finalise the arrival of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
All three players had previously been linked with Manchester United, but the club opted against meeting the financial demands required to complete those transfers.
According to recent reports, United have since turned their attention to Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni and Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently identified the pair as key midfield targets as the Red Devils continue their search for reinforcements.
Tchouaméni is believed to be Manchester United’s preferred option, with the club aiming to add as many as three midfielders before the transfer window closes. However, Chelsea have now emerged as serious contenders for the France international’s signature.
The Blues are preparing for the possibility of losing Enzo Fernández this summer, making the addition of an elite defensive midfielder a top priority. Reports suggest Alonso has personally outlined his plans to Tchouaméni, convincing the former Monaco star that Chelsea represents the ideal next step in his career.
If the move materialises, it would represent a significant setback for Manchester United and Michael Carrick’s recruitment plans while handing Chelsea one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders.
