Chelsea and Manchester United are closely monitoring highly rated Mexican teenager Gilberto Mora after the 17-year-old announced himself on the world stage with a series of impressive performances at the World Cup.

The Tijuana midfielder has emerged as one of the tournament’s standout young talents, producing an eye-catching display in Mexico’s Round of 32 victory over Ecuador. As the youngest player competing at this year’s World Cup, Mora showcased remarkable composure, technical ability and confidence, causing Ecuador numerous problems during the opening stages of the match.

Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has introduced the youngster carefully throughout the tournament. Mora made a brief substitute appearance in the opening group game against South Africa before remaining on the bench for the clash with South Korea. However, after earning his first World Cup start against Czechia, he did enough to retain his place in the starting line-up against Ecuador.

His rapid rise comes as little surprise to those who have followed his progress. Mora has consistently impressed whenever given an opportunity, quickly establishing himself as one of Mexico’s brightest prospects. He also played a significant role in his country’s Gold Cup triumph last year, becoming a regular first-team player at just 16 years old. Although injuries temporarily disrupted his development earlier this year, the talented midfielder has returned in outstanding form.

His performances have inevitably attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Chelsea and Manchester United understood to be among the Premier League sides keeping a close watch on his progress. If Mora continues on his current trajectory, he could soon become one of the most sought-after young players in world football.
