Chelsea Hesitant on Price Tag for Top Goalkeeper Amidst Arsenal and Man City Interest
Top Portuguese football newspaper O Jogo reported yesterday that Chelsea, alongside Arsenal and Manchester City, are seriously interested in signing Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa this summer.
Costa has established himself as one of Europe’s premier goalkeepers and is expected to secure a move to a top club after the Euros with Portugal this summer.
Chelsea, eager to remain in contention, knows that new manager Enzo Maresca is keen to sign a goalkeeper who excels with his feet and is solid between the sticks.
Costa fits this profile perfectly and has been outstanding for Porto since breaking into the first team as a young talent.
However, the challenge for Chelsea lies in making this dream signing a reality, especially with Champions League contenders like Manchester City and Arsenal also in the race.
Diogo Costa stands out as the best available ball-playing goalkeeper not already at a top club. This widespread recognition, however, means his acquisition will come at a high cost.
Unlike an undiscovered talent from a lesser-known league, Costa is Porto and Portugal’s first-choice goalkeeper, closely monitored by Europe’s elite clubs since his early days.
While Chelsea could secure his services, the financial outlay would be substantial.
Considering the €40 million spent on three goalkeepers over the past two years, this amount could have covered most of the €50-70 million needed to sign the 24-year-old Costa, who is just entering his prime.
Costa represents a near-certain success, but securing him will require a significant investment.
