Arsenal Suffer Transfer Blow as World Cup Winner Pushes for Dream Move

Arsenal have been dealt a fresh update in their long-standing interest in Julian Alvarez, with reports in Spain suggesting the Atletico Madrid striker remains determined to pursue a move away from the club despite renewed efforts to convince him to stay.
The Argentina international has enjoyed an outstanding spell since joining Atletico from Manchester City in 2024, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. Alvarez has scored 49 goals in 106 appearances under Diego Simeone, attracting interest from several of the continent’s biggest clubs.
Arsenal are known admirers of the 26-year-old as Mikel Arteta continues to assess options to strengthen his attacking department. However, Barcelona are widely regarded as the player’s preferred destination, with reports claiming the Catalan giants view Alvarez as one of their priority targets.
Atletico Madrid have made it clear they do not intend to sell their star striker this summer. The Spanish club reportedly rejected a €150 million (£130m) bid from rivals Real Madrid earlier this month and remain determined to keep hold of the World Cup winner.
Speaking after Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the World Cup, Alvarez addressed the speculation surrounding his future. While he stopped short of publicly naming Barcelona as his preferred next club, reports in Spain suggest he has informed Atletico of his desire to leave, with Hansi Flick’s side remaining his first choice.
The latest developments are likely to come as a blow to Arsenal, whose hopes of signing Alvarez appear increasingly slim unless Barcelona are unable to complete a deal.
