The Gunners have been searching for a new backup goalkeeper as they prepare for the departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is understood to have requested a move in pursuit of regular first-team football. With Kepa set to leave, Arsenal identified former Leeds United shot-stopper Illan Meslier as one of their leading targets.

Meslier, 26, became available as a free agent following his exit from Leeds United, making him an attractive option for Mikel Arteta’s side. Arsenal had been weighing up several experienced goalkeepers, including Yan Sommer, Matthew Ryan and Stefan Ortega, but Meslier quickly emerged as the preferred choice.

One concern surrounding the move was whether the French goalkeeper would accept another backup role after losing his starting place at Leeds during the 2025/26 season following a difficult run of form. Despite those doubts, the player has now committed to Arsenal.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the deal has been fully agreed, revealing that Meslier has already completed his medical and signed his contract with the North London club. Romano’s trademark “Here we go” announcement signals that the transfer is now effectively complete, with only the club’s official confirmation remaining.

Meslier is expected to provide strong competition and reliable cover between the posts as Arsenal strengthen their squad ahead of another demanding campaign across the Premier League, domestic cup competitions and the Champions League.
