Paul Scholes has urged Arsenal to make every effort to sign Julian Alvarez this summer, describing the Argentina international as a “top-class” player capable of taking Mikel Arteta’s side to another level.

The Gunners have renewed their interest in the Atletico Madrid forward after identifying him as their leading attacking target. Arteta is eager to strengthen his frontline despite guiding Arsenal to the Premier League title and the Champions League final last season, believing another elite forward is needed to keep the club competing on multiple fronts.

Alvarez is reportedly open to a new challenge following Atletico Madrid’s disappointing fifth-place finish in La Liga and their Champions League semi-final defeat to Arsenal. Since joining the Spanish club from Manchester City in 2024, the 26-year-old has scored 49 goals across two seasons, underlining his reputation as one of Europe’s most reliable forwards.

Before moving to Spain, Alvarez also impressed at Manchester City, netting 36 goals despite spending much of his time competing with Erling Haaland for a starting place.

Scholes believes Arsenal should move decisively if the opportunity arises, arguing that Alvarez possesses the quality, intelligence and work rate to become a perfect fit in Arteta’s tactical system.

The striker is currently focused on Argentina’s World Cup campaign, with discussions over his future expected to intensify once the tournament concludes.

Although any deal would require a significant financial commitment, Arsenal continue to view Alvarez as a dream signing and remain hopeful they can take advantage of the evolving transfer situation before the summer window closes.
