Former Liverpool star, Danny Murphy has questioned the reason behind Arsenal’s interest in Brentford goalkeeper, David Raya.

According to Murphy, he doesn’t understand why the Gunners want to sign a new goalkeeper in a spot currently occupied by No. 1, Aaron Ramsdale.

It is no news that the Gunners have reportedly made contact with Raya’s representatives to discuss a personal agreement, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Brentford are said to have fixed Raya’s price tag at £40million, a valuation Arsenal are yet to match.

But Murphy believes signing a new goalkeeper for £40million that is not going to be a starter at Emirates doesn’t make sense.

He told talkSPORT: “The Arsenal thing is real… I am really struggling with that. Two-fold. One, if you don’t get in, what it says to Ramsdale, and what Arteta’s thinking of him… Because why would you need to pay 40 million for a keeper if you are not gonna start him?

“And from the flipside, if you are Raya, your next move has to be to a club where you are No.1. There is no way he is going to sit with Arteta… Well, maybe the game has changed.

“The only way you are getting through the door is if the manager says you are starting.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal said they want to sign Raya to create competition for Ramsdale.
