Arsenal’s pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres appears to be on the verge of collapse, according to recent reports.

The Sporting Lisbon striker has been in sensational form, netting an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances over the past two seasons. His prolific scoring record has made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe, attracting interest from several top clubs.

Arsenal have been leading the race to sign the 26-year-old, ahead of competition from Manchester United, Barcelona, and Juventus. Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta identified Gyokeres as their preferred target, viewing him as a better fit than other options such as Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins.

However, negotiations with Sporting Lisbon have hit a major stumbling block. It’s understood that the Portuguese champions have backtracked on a previous gentleman’s agreement, instead demanding a higher transfer fee than initially discussed. This shift in stance has reportedly left Arsenal frustrated, with Andrea Berta said to be increasingly “resentful” over the drawn-out talks and now prepared to walk away from the deal.

The Gunners are eager to strengthen their attack after struggling for goals last season, but their hopes of signing Gyokeres are now fading. Unless Sporting drastically lowers their demands, Arsenal may be forced to explore alternative options in the transfer market as their search for a top-class striker continues.

Arsenal currently sit third in the Premier League net spend table over the past five years, highlighting their commitment to building a competitive squad.
