Arsenal Plot Shock Hijack of Liverpool-Agreed Deal as Arteta Eyes Defensive Upgrade

Arsenal are reportedly preparing to rival Liverpool for the signing of versatile defender Lutsharel Geertruida as Mikel Arteta continues reshaping his squad ahead of the new season.

The Dutch international enjoyed an impressive campaign on loan at Sunderland after joining from RB Leipzig last summer. Operating primarily at right-back but equally comfortable in central defence, Geertruida made 30 Premier League appearances and played a key role in Sunderland’s remarkable seventh-place finish, which secured qualification for the Europa League.

Liverpool came close to signing the defender during the January transfer window after injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong left Arne Slot short of options. Reports in Germany claimed the Reds had already agreed personal terms with Geertruida, with Slot eager to reunite with the player he previously coached at Feyenoord.

Despite that agreement, Liverpool were unable to complete the transfer before the deadline due to the complexity of negotiating with both Sunderland and RB Leipzig. Although the Merseyside club have retained their interest, Arsenal are now said to be considering a move of their own.

Arteta is believed to value Geertruida’s versatility, with the 25-year-old capable of providing cover at both right-back and centre-back. His arrival could also influence Arsenal’s plans for other defensive targets as the club continues evaluating options ahead of the new campaign.

While Liverpool remain firmly in the race, Arsenal’s interest has set up the possibility of another transfer battle between the Premier League rivals as both clubs look to strengthen their defensive ranks before the window closes.
