Arsenal complete surprise signing of former Leeds goalkeeper on free transfer

Arsenal have strengthened their goalkeeping department by completing the unexpected signing of former Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer.
The 26-year-old joins the Premier League champions after his contract with Leeds expired at the end of last season, bringing valuable top-flight and Championship experience to Mikel Arteta’s squad. Meslier has signed a two-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal holding the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
The move comes as Arsenal look to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, with Meslier expected to provide experienced competition and reliable cover between the posts. Having made 215 appearances in English football since arriving from French side Lorient, the goalkeeper offers proven pedigree despite an inconsistent spell during Leeds’ recent seasons.
Meslier progressed through Lorient’s academy before moving to England as a teenager, quickly establishing himself as one of the country’s most promising young goalkeepers. His arrival gives Arsenal additional depth in a demanding season that will see the club compete on multiple fronts, including the Premier League and European competition.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Meslier expressed his delight at joining the north London club, describing the move as a proud moment in his career. The Frenchman also spoke of his ambition to win trophies and contribute to Arsenal’s continued success under Arteta.
While the transfer may have come as a surprise, Arsenal view Meslier’s arrival as a smart, low-risk acquisition, adding an experienced goalkeeper without paying a transfer fee as they continue to strengthen their title-winning squad.
