Chelsea Launch Late Bid to Hijack Arsenal Target Morten Hjulmand Despite Atletico Agreement
Chelsea have made a surprise move to hijack the transfer of Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, despite reports suggesting the midfielder has already agreed to join Atletico Madrid.
The Blues have been one of the busiest clubs in this summer’s transfer window as new head coach Xabi Alonso continues reshaping his squad following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign. Having already spent more than £100 million, Chelsea have strengthened several areas, with highly-rated youngsters Geovany Quenda and Marco Palestra among their standout arrivals.
However, their recruitment drive is far from over. Chelsea are expected to enter the market for another midfielder, particularly after agreeing to sell Andrey Santos to Manchester United in a deal worth around £50 million.
Hjulmand has been on Arsenal’s radar for some time, with the Gunners reportedly maintaining strong interest in the Denmark international as they look to reinforce Mikel Arteta’s midfield options. Yet Atletico Madrid appeared to have won the race after reaching an agreement with Sporting worth around €40 million (£34 million), while the player is believed to have given his commitment to the Spanish club.
Despite that, fresh reports claim Chelsea have attempted to disrupt the transfer by submitting an improved financial offer. The London club are said to be testing Atletico’s position in the hope that Sporting could reconsider the deal.
Whether Chelsea’s late intervention is enough to change Hjulmand’s mind remains to be seen, but their interest has added an unexpected twist to a transfer that had looked all but settled.
