Maresca shares why he feels bad about Chelsea’s 2-1 win against Newcastle
Chelsea were in action on Sunday in the Premier League as they maintain their impressive form under new manager Enzo Maresca.
Despite the Blues 2-1 win, Maresca in a post-match statement said he feels bad and ahamed for leaving out certain players against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Recall that Maresca left the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Marc Cucurella, and Joao Felix on the bench at the start of the tie.
The west London side went on to win the game even without these stars, thanks to goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer.
Chelsea conceded a goal during the tie from Alexander Isak’s 32nd-minute strike.
Speaking after the Blues’ win, Maresca said (via Fabrizio Romano) that every game he felt bad and shame because he has to leave players out.
The manager, however, stressed that the decision was the only way to try to compete.
“No matter how many changes we make, it’s important the style is there, the identity is there,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have improved under Maresca this season as compared former manager Mauricio Pochettino’s reign at the club last season.
The Blues are in the top six on the league table this season.
